This What Pet Should I Get? book activity is a great extension to the new Dr. Seuss book! Kids will have a blast creating their own dream pet!
What Pet Should I Get? is the new Dr. Seuss book and it is so fun. Follow along with a young boy and his sister as they go to the pet store to pick out a pet. The only problem is they can’t make up their mind about which one to get. As they are faced with more and more choices, they get even more confused. They even begin to make up imaginary pets they could get instead. They finally pick one, but what do they get?
This activity is super simple to do with kids of all ages. I also created a free printable to make it even easier! It encourages kids to use their creativity and imagination to dream up the perfect pet of their own. Then they can answer questions that describe their pet.
I decided to do this activity because Evan loves to draw. He can draw for an hour or more at a time some days. He also loves to tell me all about his drawings. He makes up all kinds of elaborate stories about what is happening in his drawings. So I knew he would love the chance to draw his own dream pet and then tell me about it.

What Pet Should I Get? Drawing Activity
I started by reading the book to Evan again. Then I showed him the printable I made. I explained that he was going to create his dream pet. It could be a real animal or an imaginary one and could have any characteristics he wanted.
He said his dream pet was a dog and got right to work drawing one. He even added grass and a tree and some flowers to his drawing.
Then I sat down with him and went through the questions on the sheet. He really liked this part too. He thought it was awesome that he could decide what his pet’s name was, what color it was, what it ate and what it liked to do.
He immediately asked me to do another one. While he was waiting for me to print another sheet, he drew fish in a fish tank on the back of the paper because that was his “second dream pet.”
I printed off a bunch of these to leave out for him to do again and again. I have a feeling he will be creating lots of pets over the next few days!
