Valentine’s Day Wreath Craft Alphabet Activity

This Valentine’s Day wreath craft is an adorable holiday decoration and an alphabet activity that will give your child practice with identifying letters and letter sounds while developing fine motor skills.

Valentine's Day Wreath Craft. An alphabet activity that develops letter identification, letter sounds and develops fine motor skills.

Evan isn’t a big fan of elaborate crafts, but he does like to make decorations for holidays. This wreath craft is simple enough for him to enjoy and also provides an excellent opportunity to work on letter identification and letter sounds. We are really working on developing his fine motor skills so I used stickers to give him more practice with that.

Materials Needed:

Paper plate

Heart stickers

Permanent Marker

Scissors

Yarn – if you would like to hang the wreath that way

Activity Prep:

1. Cut the middle out of the paper plate so you have a wreath.

2. Write the words “happy valentine’s day” on the plate. I wrote them in lowercase letters so that he could match the uppercase sticker letters to them. They should go around the wreath as shown below. I used the lines on the paper plate as a guide for letter spacing. For the size of our stickers, I wrote a letter on every third line on the plate. You want to make sure your stickers are small enough to fit around the wreath.

3. Write one uppercase letter on each heart sticker to match the letters written on the plate.

Activity Details:

Explain to your child that they will be matching the uppercase letter stickers to the lowercase letters on the paper plate wreath. As Evan was working on this, I asked him what sounds each letter made and repeated them several times if he did not know them. For some of the letters we even discussed other words that started with that letter.

In the end, we have an adorable Valentine’s Day wreath to hang on our door in the playroom. We are even thinking of making one for Grandma now!
