We have been on a counting mats kick lately. These fall tree counting mats were great practice for both my 3 and 5-year-old because they go up to the number 20. They also enjoyed these spider web counting mats.

I knew I wanted to make a fun Thanksgiving counting mat too. Since we had craft feathers leftover from this fun turkey activity, I decided that a turkey counting mat would be perfect.

My kids are happy any time they get to play with feathers, so I knew they would enjoy this one too.

Turkey Counting Mats

A hands-on turkey math activity for preschool.

I invited my kids to practice adding the correct amount of feathers to the turkey. I worked with my 3-year-old and helped her count the feathers to each turkey. We only did numbers 1-5 so far since she is just learning to count.

Since I am always looking for ways to modify an activity so it works for both kids and my son (5 years old) is beyond counting to fifteen, we used the blank mat to practice simple addition and subtraction.  In the picture below he is adding 4 red feathers and 4 purple feathers.

I am so glad that I was able to make this work for both of them! They will be a great addition to our math center this November!
