I love to use counting mats to work on counting and even addition or subtraction with my kids. That’s what I like about them. They can be used in a variety of ways and at varying levels of ability.
Some of our favorites are these ocean counting mats and these spider counting mats. My kids loved them both!

Using the Penguin Counting Mats
I use the lower numbers with my 3-year-old and I help her count out the penguins. She does some of it alone, but still needs me to guide her along.
I use the higher number cards to practice addition and subtraction with my 5-year-old. For instance, we will use the number 12 mat and I will have him roll a dice and put that many penguins on the mat. Then he will roll the dice again and add that many more penguins to the mat. Then he will count them all.
My kids enjoy the hands-on aspect of this counting mats and they are always excited to get to use new erasers or counters on them.
These penguin counting mats are perfect for a winter theme or a polar theme. And so easy to pull out and use whenever the need arises.
