Painting with Fall Leaves Process Art

The other day my kids enjoyed an afternoon of painting with fall leaves. This fall process art activity is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers!

Although I don’t often share painting activities on my blog, my kids love to paint and I try to give them lots of opportunities to do so. Most of the time I just pull out the paint and paintbrushes and let them go to town, but occasionally I like to throw in a unique painting experience.

Since fall is upon us, I thought I would create a fall process art activity. I just recently bought a bunch of faux fall leaves at the dollar store and decided they would make excellent paintbrushes for our fall painting.

The fall leaves I used came in bunches with bendy stems attached. I mention this because it gave the leaf a bit of structure and I think this made them easier to paint with. I haven’t tried the loose leaves without stems. You can get both types of leaves at Dollar Tree. The ones with stems are right next to all of the faux flowers.

Cut a few leaves off of the bunch and clip a clothespin onto each one. Then pour paint into cups and grab your paper.

Add clothespins to fall leaves and paint with fall leaves. A fall process art activity for preschoolers and toddlers.

Alyssa was still napping, so Evan got started first. He thought it was really funny, but was super excited to paint with the leaves. And boy did he paint! He painted one piece of paper after another and mixed those beautiful fall colors all up.

Once Alyssa woke, I invited her to paint with the leaves too. She was far more reserved in her painting. She was very focused on painting things just so. That is until she realized how much fun it is to drip the paint on to the paper. She would get the leaf soaked with paint and then hang it over the paper and let drizzle and splatter all over the paper.

When the paintings finally dried, I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful they were! The colors are so vibrant and eye-popping. I am now thinking of ways we can use them for another activity! For now they are hanging up in the playroom. I love the huge pop of color they add!
