What is in the Literacy Learning Station?
Last week I wrote a post about how I set up a literacy learning station. Today I will share what supplies and manipulatives are in our learning station.
Over time I have accumulated a bunch of different literacy manipulatives. Many of them were bought at dollar stores or found in dollar bins. I also buy learning tools and games at holidays and birthdays. I did invest in some additional supplies from Amazon recently because I view it as an investment and would be paying MUCH more for preschool outside the home. Plus, my younger child will benefit from them in future.

- Pip Squeak Markers – love that they encourage Evan to hold a writing utensil properly since they are shorter. We actually have the scented ones and he absolutely LOVES that they are scented. I found the scented ones at Target.
- Do a Dot Markers
- Write and Wipe pockets – I chose the 5 pack option and it is cheaper
- Child scissors – I really like these, but they seem to be sold out from Amazon right now. We like that they have a spring.
- Dry-erase markers with eraser included on cap
- Glue stick
- Crayons
- Clipboard
- Small pocket chart – mine is from the $1 Spot at Target
- A supply caddy to hold all of the supplies – you can usually find this in dollar stores or the $1 Spot
- A paper tray to hold all of the printables – you can also find these for $1 often

- Photo Stacking Blocks
- Magnetic letters – lowercase and uppercase
- Leapfrog Fridge Phonics – we actually have the word builder, but it appears that they don’t sell that anymore. This one is on my list to buy though.
- Uppercase/lowercase letter matching puzzles
- Wooden alphabet puzzles
- Foam alphabet puzzles
- Alphabet lacing beads
- Alphabet stamps
- Foam bath letters
- Alphabet stickers
- Alphabet sponges
- Home made bottle cap letters – write letters on water bottle lids
- Glass gems with letters written on them with permanent marker.
Many of these were bought on sale or clearance. I highly recommend keeping an eye out for sales and checking the dollar stores often. Please don’t feel like you need a ton of these items to start a literacy station in your home. There are many free printable resources and dollar store items you can use in your station.
I also plan to print and laminate pocket chart cards, letter sounds games and other printables as I need them. I will always link to those when I include them in our weekly literacy learning station posts.
