Lego Duplo Tower Counting Game

This fun Lego Duplo counting game gives kids math practice while building towers. Children must use critical thinking skills to make the tallest tower they can without it falling over.

Evan is 3.5 years old and has recently developed a HUGE interest in Lego Duplos. He plays with them nearly every single day. He loves to build all kinds of things from robots to spaceships to skyscrapers. Because he is so interested in them, I am finding fun ways to incorporate them into our daily learning.

This game requires two players so Allen loves to join in and play against Evan. They both really enjoy the game. As usual, it often opens the door for life lessons regarding being a gracious winner and not being a sore loser. This is very hard for Evan right now, but we are slowly working on it. Although it seems easier to just skip games like this altogether, I feel it’s best to take on the problem and help him learn the skills he needs to cope in life at a young age. Regardless, they have a lot of fun playing the game together!

Activity Details:

First way to play

The first player will roll the die and grab the corresponding number of Lego blocks. They will then put them together to begin building a structure. The second player will do the same. Each player is working towards making a tall tower, but at the same time they want it to be sturdy enough to not fall down. The first player whose tower falls over loses and the other is the winner.

At this age, Evan doesn’t totally get the strategy behind making a tower that won’t fall, so his often fall in a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise, the game could go on for quite a while. My husband does let him win a lot of the time. Two kids playing against each other would be the best scenario for this way to play.

Second way to play

Players each take turns rolling the die and building their structure, but this time the game is limited to 5-10 rolls each and the person with the highest tower after the last roll wins the game. This is the best way to play with kids vs adults or kids of varying skill levels. Obviously older kids and adults still have an advantage, but it evens the playing field a little more.

As he gets more skilled at counting, I plan to use a pair of dice to work on counting higher numbers and set the stage for addition of two numbers. For older kids, you could even use 3 dice.
