This Cat in the Hat inspired shape activity is a hands-on way to learn shapes and practice patterning after reading the book! My kids had a great time making hats for the cat.
This Cat in the Hat activity is great because it can be used with children of varying ages and levels of ability. Both my two and four-year old were able to participate to varying degrees. They really enjoy the book, so they thought this was a fun way to play after reading it!

- Sketch the cat minus his hat on a sheet of white card stock. I am not artistic by any means so there’s a great chance you can do a better job than I did. Haha. Then color it in with the crayons.
- Print the shapes printable I made.
- Cut out all of the shapes.
Cat in the Hat Inspired Shape Activity
My two-year old just played with the shapes and put them on the cat’s head any way she wanted. While she was putting shapes on his head, I talked to her about them.
I made sure to say their names whenever possible. For example, “I like that you put a triangle on his head!” or “I am going to put a square on top of that circle.” She often repeated the names or asked me “What’s this one?” and then I would tell her. By the end of this activity, she was saying many of the shapes by name as she placed them on his head.
I knew my son would want to get involved, so he explored patterning with the shapes on the cat’s head. Not only was he able to pattern with shapes, but also with colors. Sometimes the patterns he made were strictly shapes only with no regard for the color of each one and vice versa, but then we also started patterning with regard to shapes and colors. This turned out to be a fun way to extend the learning beyond what was expected!
Afterward, I left them to their own devices and they enjoyed making all kinds of crazy hats for the cat to wear. My son even made one that extended the width of the table. He was very impressed with the super tall hat he gave the cat!
