Preschool Math: Counting Feathers Sticky Wall

This preschool math activity is a fun way to play and learn with feathers. The sticky wall makes it even more engaging for preschoolers. It is a great creative outlet as well.

Preschool Math Counting Feathers Sticky Wall. Fun math activity for kids.

It’s time for another PLAYful Preschool post and this week the theme is feathers. The team is bringing you lots feather fun and learning! Please follow #playfulpreschool across all social media and don’t forget to check out all the other activities at the bottom of this post. If you missed our scarecrow lessons from last week, make sure you check out our Invitation to Make a Scarecrow with play dough activity.

I was inspired by a post from Deborah at Teach Preschool when I came up with this activity. Her post Sticky Paper Turkey Dress-up and Patterning looked like so much fun! However, I wanted to work on counting with Evan. I decided to make a similar sticky wall, but have Evan count out certain amounts of feathers to add to the turkey.

Materials Needed:

Clear contact paper

Tape

Brown construction paper

Rainbow Feathers – we found that the fuzzy feathers are better than the slick ones for this activity

Dice or pieces of paper with a specific number of dots on them.

Activity Prep:

1. Cut the contact paper to whatever size you would like.

2. Tape the contact paper to the wall with the sticky side facing out.

3. Cut a turkey shape out of brown paper. I just free-handed the shape I wanted with pencil and then cut it out.

4. Use markers to add eyes, beak and wattle if you would like.

5. Stick turkey to contact paper.

Activity Details:

I explained to Evan that he was going to roll the dice and then identify how many dots were facing up on the dice. Once he counted the dots he would put that many feathers on the turkey.

Every time he rolled the dice, he counted the dots and then counted out that many feathers. Then he added them to the sticky wall. He really enjoyed sticking them on the wall. He also got creative with how he put them up there and which colors he wanted to use each time. Once had the feathers the way he liked them, we took them all down and started again.

This was our first time using a sticky wall and it was a lot of fun. I am definitely planning on doing more of them! Have you done a sticky wall activity with your kids? Let me know what you did in the comments!
