Planting Flowers Alphabet Activity
This planting flowers alphabet activity is such a great way to play and learn this spring! While playing, my kids practiced letter identification, letter sounds and even CVC word spelling.
One of our very favorite spring alphabet activities was this water the flowers alphabet activity that we did last year. This time, we did a take on alphabet flowers that we can play with inside. Supplies Needed:

- Foam flower stickers
- Green craft sticks
- Green play dough
- Flower pots – (mine is a herb planter from Target and the pots are stuck to the tray)
- Write a letter on each of the flower stickers with a permanent marker.
- Glue or tape each flower to one of the green craft sticks with the backing left on it. Otherwise the flowers will stick together. I learned this the hard way.
- Put green play dough in each of the pots. I used one 4 oz can of plan dough per pot.
Planting Flowers Alphabet Activity
For the most part, I just let my kids play with the alphabet flowers and stick them in the play dough. We talked about the letters as we played. For example, I would say things like, “I am going to plant the letter ‘b’ in this pot” or “Which letter are you planting now?” or “Let’s plant the letter that makes the sound ‘ddd’ like dog. Can you help me find it?”

This alone is a very effective way to practice letter identification and letter sounds. My kids enjoy having me sit down and play with them like this.
Of course, I also just let them have free rein to play with them however they wanted as well. They talked about colors and counted how many flowers they put in the pot. They discussed things like which pot had the most flowers and which had the least. They sorted the flowers by color. They took turns. And developed vocabulary. All the while playing and having fun!
My son even practiced spelling CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. It was a fantastic way for him to experiment with word families as well. For example, he put “e” in the middle pot and “t” in the last pot. Then we changed out the flower in the first pot to make several different words – get, let, met, set and so on.
As you can see, this was such a fun activity and my kids learned so much more than letters or letter sounds. I love that all I have to do it grab the flowers and play dough and have this set up in less than a minute. I am sure the kids will be enjoying it all throughout spring and summer!
