Gingerbread Man Race and Count Game

This gingerbread man race is a fun and active way to practicing counting! It’s a perfect game for a Christmas party and fun for all ages!

Gingerbread man gross motor game. A fun Christmas party game and a great way to practice counting!

This gross motor Christmas game is so simple to set up, but loads of fun! My kids asked to play it over and over and over again. I was really quite surprised by how much they enjoyed it.

Supplies Needed:

  • Foam Gingerbread men (I used a pack of 24 gingerbread men)

That is it! Sooo simple!

Gingerbread Man Race

I started by placing the gingerbread men on the floor on one side of the room and I had the kids stand on the other side of the room. I instructed the kids to run across the room, grab a gingerbread man and bring it back to the other side and continue doing this until there were no more gingerbread men in the pile.

I called out “Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me. I’m the gingerbread man” and then they took of running. They kept their gingerbread men in separate piles upon bringing them back to the other side.

After all of the gingerbread men were on the other side of the room, they began counting out how many gingerbread men they caught. My two-year old (26 months) can only count to about two or three, so my son counted hers out as well.

This was an awesome way for him to practice counting to higher numbers. He often got about 15 gingerbread men each time, so it was perfect for counting past 10. I actually think I may buy some more so he can practice counting even higher numbers while playing this game.

Gross motor Christmas game for kids!

If you have several children playing this game, there will obviously be less gingerbread men to count at the end. However, another option would be to put the kids in two teams and do this relay style. Then all of the kids in each group can count out how many gingerbread men they caught.

My daughter laughed and giggled her whole way through this game. She pretty much thought this was the best thing ever. We will be playing it again soon! My kids have already asked to do it again tonight!
