Farm Play Dough Activity

This farm play dough activity is so much fun! And it is quite easy to set up too. Win-win. Grab your farm toys, whip up some play dough and make a farm!

You probably know by now, but my kids love play dough. I recently shared this play dough recipe that uses NO cream of tartar. It’s worked better than any other recipe I’ve tried and we have been using it in all kinds of activities.

This apple pie play dough activity is our most recent favorite. Another favorite is this The Very Hungry Caterpillar play dough invitation.

We also like to use play dough to learn letters. These play dough mats have been awesome for my kids. And it was a lot of fun when we combined play dough and alphabet beads.

This farm play dough activity was definitely a hit too! My kids spent FOREVER enjoying it. It was actually pretty easy to set up. The most time-consuming part was making the play dough, but I can do each batch in about 5 minutes now, so it’s not that bad. You could always buy some if you don’t want to deal with making it.

I think brown play dough is a necessary addition to this activity because my kids absolutely loved pretending that it was mud. Letting the farm animals frolic in the mud was the best part!

Well, the mud and the white picket fences I included. The fences were perfect for this! The best part is that they were very inexpensive. I got them at Hobby Lobby – in the wood crafts section. We will definitely be using them for other activities.

This was a great way for them to engage their sense of touch and develop fine motor skills. All that play dough molding, shaping and squishing is awesome for strengthening small hand muscles!

Setting Up the Farm Activity

I followed my play dough recipe, but added brown washable watercolors instead of food coloring to make the “mud” play dough. Obviously, if you do it this way it will not be taste safe. So only do this if your children no longer put things in their mouth.

You can also try to make the play dough brown with food coloring. This kind of food coloring would probably work best since there is a brown option already.

I also made red play dough and used a store-bought can of green play dough for the grass.

Instructions:

  1. Make the play dough or set out the store-bought kind.
  2. Place all of the remaining items on a tray or just set them out on the table.
  3. Invite the kids to create a farm and pretend play!

We loved this farm play dough activity and I hope your kids do too!
