Alphabet Activities: 5 Letters in a Row

This alphabet game will reinforce letter recognition and letter sounds. It is a simple and easy way to learn the alphabet!

Alphabet Game 5 in a Row

Evan loves games, so I like to come up with games that will be fun and also incorporate learning. This one also includes the use of do-a-dot markers which always makes things more exciting. Don’t worry though, if you don’t have those you can you can use any other writing utensil to cross off the letters.

Activity Prep:

1. Write a 5 letters in a row and repeat 4 times. Do this on 2 or more pieces of paper. You need one for each person playing the game. (You can always do more letters and/or more rows if you would like to make this more challenging.)

2. Write each letter you decide to use on small piece of paper and put it in a box, bowl or bag.

Activity Instructions:

Give each player a game sheet with all the letters written on it. Then give them a do-a-dot marker or another writing utensil to mark off the letters.

The first player will put their hand in the bowl and without looking they will choose one piece of paper with a letter written on it.  Next, they will mark off the letter they chose on their game sheet. As they are finding the letter match on the their sheet they are practicing letter recognition. Then you can ask what sound the letter makes. Sometimes I even ask Evan to tell me a word that starts with that letter.

The first player to mark off all the letters in one row wins. You can still continue playing another round to see who can fill another row first and so on. This game also requires some higher order thinking skills because your child has to think about how to fill in one row as quickly as possible instead of just randomly marking off the letters.

This is so simple and easy to set-up on a whim when you have some time to fill or need to occupy your kids for a bit. This is one activity we will be doing again and again.
